AN MP has spoken out against a planned march in her constituency this weekend.

A group called Bishop Auckland Against Islam plans to stage a march in the town on Saturday (June 6) afternoon.

A spokesman for Durham police said the force is aware of the movement and expects any action on Saturday to be peaceful.

Bishop Auckland MP Helen Goodman said: "I utterly condemn this march.

"It is wholly wrong to have a march against an entire religion.

"We have a tradition of religious tolerance in Great Britain and any attempt to undermine the security of British Muslims is abhorrent.

"I want to make it absolutely clear that the people on this march do not speak for the vast majority of Bishop Auckland people.”
