CHILDREN will this week stage their own Eurovision Song Contest.

Youngsters aged nine and ten from across the region will go head to head, singing a song in a language other than English.

Last year, Escomb Primary School, from near Bishop Auckland, County Durham, won the competition with a version of classic pop tune Stand By Me sung in Lithuanian.

This year, Escomb will return to defend the title singing You’ve Got A Friend In Me in Spanish.

Other languages heard on the day will include French, Hungarian, Norwegian, German and Irish Gaelic.

Brian Stobie, Durham County Council’s international relations officer, said: “Young people in our schools need to be prepared for work, study and life in a mobile and multilingual environment.

“Many of our children will take up jobs which will see them working in different linguistic and cultural settings.”

The event takes place at the Gala Theatre, Durham, on Wednesday (May 6) from 10am to 2.30pm and pupils from 26 schools will take part.
