PEOPLE are invited to get a real taste of history at the North Yorkshire County Record Office.

They are being given the chance to nibble their way through the archives at a special evening event on May 14.

Edible archival treats and foodie facts are in store as local artisan brewers, preserve makers and bee-keepers talk about the variety of historic domestic recipes dating back to the 18th-century and how ingredients and production might compare to present day.

“Archives at Dusk” is part of the national Museums at Night festival which aims to inspire new visitors to discover the fascinating heritage on their doorstep.

People will be able to find out about domestic recipes and remedies, methods of food production - legal and illegal - and the diets of the rich and poor.

Record Office staff will also be joined by food historian, Claire Davies from the History Girls – an association of women writers of historical fiction and non-fiction.

The Record Office conservation department will also show how food products have been used to repair documents. Visitors will be able to find out what sausage skins are used for and even have a go at “gluing” with the swim bladder of a sturgeon.

Archives at Dusk, will take place on May 14 from 6pm- to 8.30pm at North Yorkshire County Record Office, Malpas Road, Northallerton.

Admission is free, and includes light refreshments. Booking is not necessary and free parking is available on site and nearby.
