POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a man died when his car landed upside down in a field near Staindrop yesterday.
The local man, who has yet to be named, died following the incident on the A688 road, near to Dunhouse Quarry, at about 5.45am.
A police spokesman said it appears the man was driving a Ford Mondeo from Barnard Castle towards Bishop Auckland when it left the road.
He said: “The vehicle has negotiated a sweeping left hand bend 100m past the entrance to Dunhouse Quarry.
“The Mondeo has crossed over onto the opposite carriageway and has struck the kerb, leaving the road, going through a wooden fence and rolled in a field before coming to rest upside down.”
The spokesman also confirmed that the man was the only person in the car and that no one else was injured in the incident.
