WOULD-be MPs will get the chance to sell themselves to the region’s bikers next week (Thursday, April 16).

The North East Motorcycle Action Group (Mag) has organised an elections hustings event with General Election candidates for the City of Durham constituency.

A Mag spokesman said: “Mag is keen to hear what the different political parties are willing to do for the 200,000-plus motorcyclists in the North-East of England.

“North East Mag has chosen to hold an election hustings because in every constituency in the North-East the motorcycle riding population far exceeds any candidate’s majority.

“Motivated bikers could actually tip the balance in a number of North-East constituencies. This is a call to action for the North-East motorcyclists who can make a difference.”

The event will be chaired by colourful former Liberal Democrat MP Lembit Opik, who is now director of communications and public affairs for Mag.

It will be held at The Salutation Inn, in Framwellgate Moor, Durham City, on Thursday, April 16, at 7.30pm.

Meanwhile, Durham School will hold a hustings event on Wednesday, April 22, from 6.15pm to 7.45pm.

It will be hosted by Kristian Hall, president of the leading independent school’s politics society, and is open to all.

It will be attended by Labour’s Roberta Blackman-Woods, Conservative Rebecca Coulson, Liberal Democrat Craig Martin and Jonathan Elmer for the Green Party.
