TWO police officers were injured after a head-on crash with a car being driven the wrong way down a one way street.

The incident happened at 10.26pm on Wednesday in Pilgrim Street, Newcastle, near to its junction with Pandon Bank.

A Vauxhall Vectra was being driven the wrong way down the one way street and collided head-on with a marked police vehicle.

Fire, ambulance and additional police resources attended the scene.

Two police officers involved in the collision were taken to Newcastle RVI Hospital for treatment.

The 44-year-old male driver of the Vectra ran off from the scene but was was detained nearby.

He was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and is also under investigation for driving whilst under the influence of drink or drugs.

The road was closed with local diversions in place and it has since reopened.
