A PRIMARY school has picked up a national award for tackling bullying.

North Park Primary School, in Spennymoor, has secured the BIG Award for Excellence in Challenging Bullying for the second year in a row.

It was awarded by the Bullying Intervention Group, a charity that helps schools, children’s services and companies to tackle bullying.

Head teacher Patricia Monk said the school works hard to eradicate bullying, including raising awareness of internet safety and cyber bullying.

She said: “This award recognises the commitment of staff and governors in doing all they can to ensure children feel safe and happy so they can thrive at the school.

“The anti-bullying group meets regularly and there are playground buddies who are always there to support other pupils, the older children also act as playground sports leaders to support younger children in their play."

Val Mc Farlane, director of the Bullying Intervention Group, said the school had demonstrated that it takes the issue very seriously.

She said: "The strategies that are in place in North Park ensure that every child can feel safe and reach their full educational potential.

“North Park has an excellent peer support scheme, with properly trained pupils to look out for each other.

“They have a comprehensive anti-bullying policy, regular staff training and involve parents in all their anti-bullying work.”
