A CONTROLLED explosion was carried out on the beach at Tynemouth tonight (Sunday, March 29) following the discovery of a rusted hand grenade.
The discovery was made by a member of the public who reported it to Northumbria Police just after 5.50pm.
Officers attended the scene and found the grenade about 50m from Tynemouth Sailing Club.
A 200m cordon was put in place and an Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal team from Catterick Garrison, North Yorkshire, was called to the scene.
At 9pm, Northumbria Police confirmed a controlled explosion had been carried out and the cordon removed.
