THREE County Durham school football teams are one step away from reaching a tournament's national finals.

Murton St Josephs RC Primary School, Cotsford Junior School, from Peterlee, and Blue Coat Junior School, Durham, all have teams which have successfully progressed from the county knockout rounds of the the Danone Nations Cup and will head into the regional finals on March 21.

Blue Coat Junior School girls and Cotsford Junior School boys will compete at Wright Robinson Sports College in Manchester, while Murton St Josephs boy’s team will play at Cramlington Learning Village on the same day.

Former Liverpool and England centre back John Scales, ambassador of the tournament said: “It's a truly remarkable project that brings joy to thousands of kids nationally.”

The Danone Nations Cup is the world’s biggest football tournament for 10-12 year olds. 2.5m children worldwide take part in the competition each year, with 3,000 schools competing in the English leg run by the English Schools’ Football Association.

All teams will compete against schools from across the country in a bid to reach the national final.
