A CANCER sufferer who had a breast removed due to cancer is to hold a fundraising night to help raise money for Bishop Auckland Hospital to fight the illness.

Leanne Smith, 37, of Ferryhill, was diagnosed with breast cancer last April and although she has been given the all clear she will need treatment for the next ten years.

Mrs Smith, of Helmsely Close, whose mother Janice Foster died of breast cancer three and a half years ago, had to have a breast removed.

She now plans to have the second breast removed after her mother initially seemed to beat cancer in one breast before it returned in the other, then spread.

She is now organising a charity event, dubbed Leanne’s Kicking Cancer’s Butt Charity Bash, with husband Craig Smith.

Mr Smith, 39, said: “She had treatment at the Mara chemotherapy unit, at Bishop Auckland Hospital, and this event is so that we can help them too.

“We want to raise as much money as we possibly can. Everyone seems to think that we are going to raise £5,000

“That would be brilliant and the event is already a sell-out and there will music and a raffle which has more than 50 prizes.”

The event is at Ferryhill Working Men’s Club, on North Street, on Saturday (March 14) from 5.30pm.
