THE family of a baby born with a serious lung condition has raised more than £1,500 for the hospital which saved her life.

Complications at birth led Layla-Rose Kelly, of Ferryhill, County Durham, to be born with a punctured lung and life threatening lung infection.

The youngster was rushed to the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle, where she spent three weeks on an Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation machine before finally being released on Boxing Day last year.

Now nearly four-months-old, Layla-Rose is a healthy and happy baby and her delighted family, including parents, Michelle Harwood and Liam Kelly, and siblings, Blake and Savannah, is determined to give something back to the hospital’s Paediatric Intensive Care Unit.

Yesterday (Saturday, March 8), they staged a fundraising event at Ferryhill Station Working Men’s Club, featuring a raffle, disco and buffet.

So far, the total raised stands at £1,500 and there are still donations to be counted.

Miss Harwood, 23, said: “I was distraught when I found out she was ill. It was a terrifying time. It’s great so many people have come along today.

“I want to thank them all and everyone who helped organise it.”
