AN author with a penchant for gothic literature discussed her debut novel with avid readers as part of a campaign to bring writers and bookworms together.

Lauren Owen was grilled by book fans at Newton Aycliffe Library in County Durham on Friday (March 6) about her gothic horror novel, The Quick.

The 29-year-old is working towards a PHD in gothic writing and fan culture at Durham University and adores authors such as Mary Shelley and Oscar Wilde.

Her library visit was organised through Read Regional, a campaign to connect readers and authors across Yorkshire and the North East.

Members of reading groups from Newton Aycliffe and nearby towns had read The Quick in anticipation of her visit and quizzed her about her influences.

She said: “We have had a wonderful chat about the gothic genre and its appeal, especially to women.

Vivienne Dryden, divisional librarian, said: “It’s a fantastic opportunity for people who love reading to meet an actual author and find out how she comes up with her ideas. “It’s been very inspiring.”
