THE CENTENARY Scott Trial has resulted in more than £16,300 being raised for local charities.

The hugely popular trial biking event held annually in October near Feldom Ranges in Swaledale celebrated its 100th year in 2014, and a presentation event on Friday, February 27, saw cheques given out to local causes.

The presentation evening, held in the Buck Hotel, Reeth, saw chairman of the Scott Trial Committee John Fraser speak about the trial and its history, thanking landowner, gamekeepers and tenant farmers for their continued support, as well as those who help organise the event.

Scott Trial treasurer Richard Hague handed cheques to around 30 charity groups, including Swaledale Mountain Rescue, St Teresa’s Hospice, local primary schools, Robert Dent Memorial Fund and the Mowbray Suite at the Friarage Hospital.

Nigel Mackenzie, manager of the 2014 Centenary Scott Relay Team, presented cheques for more than £4,000 raised by the team to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and Great North Air Ambulance.

Three-times World Champion Yrjo Vesterinen, Trevor Willans, Joe Buckworth, Glen Scholey, Mark Willis and Carl Tennent - some of whom were multiple award winners in the event from the 1970s until more recently - completed the trial as a relay team in just over seven hours.

At the end of the evening, retiring Scott Trial secretary Chris Wallis was presented with a Neil Sturgeon framed photograph of Orgate Falls, one of her favourite sections of the trial, in recognition of her work and dedication to the Scott Trial over the last seven years.
