A PENSIONER who was knocked down by a car was not treated in hospital until over an hour later, it emerged today.

The 75-year-old man was hit by a car close to Tesco at Throston Grange in Hartlepool, just after 9.30am this morning (Monday, February 23).

But he did not reach the nearest Accident and Emergency department at the University Hospital of North Tees in Stockton until 10.39am.

A spokeswoman for the North East Ambulance Service said when the call was first made the man's injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, and there were three further calls in the same area to patients with life-threatening injuries.

She said that when the man's condition changed and his condition was believed to be life-threatening, an ambulance reached him by 10.02am.

Police said the man was in collision with a white Vauxhall Astra, driven by a 20-year-old woman.

No arrests were made and Throston Grange Lane and Wiltshire Way were closed for a while following the accident.

The pensioner was said to be in a stable condition in hospital.
