AN ANCIENT institution has embraced 21st century technology.
Durham Cathedral has welcomed into its hallowed surrounds the cameras and associated technology required to produce Google Street View.
The result is a virtual tour inside the 900-year-old treasure, which can be viewed for free online at maps.google.com by searching for Durham Cathedral and dragging a person icon onto the map.
Internet users can see the nave, choir area, Chapel of the Nine Altars and more.
The hundreds of photographs that had to be pieced together to produce the finished piece were taken by a team that visited the cathedral for two days last July, using a two metre-tall trolley-camera that weighs 80kg.
