FREEMASONS have donated thousands of pounds to help six of the region’s hospices.

Last month, senior members of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Durham Freemasons visited St Cuthbert’s Hospice, in Durham to tour the unit and present the six hospices with their annual grant from the Freemasons Grand Charity.

More than £13,000 was presented to representatives of St Cuthbert’s, Butterwick, Hartlepool and District, St Claire’s and St Teresa’s hospices.

The presentation was made by John Arthur, Deputy Provincial Grand Master of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Durham Freemasons.

He said: "Since 1984 the Freemasons Grand Charity has donated over £11m towards the operating costs of hospice services across England and Wales.

“This is just another example of one of the fantastic initiatives we, as Freemasons support, the work carried out at these hospices is crucial and we are delighted to be able to assist”.
