AN idea which could see the return of a Bonfire Night fireworks display to a North-East town looks set to be discussed.

The concept is in the very early stages but if it is seen as a viable option then the event would take place on land alongside the West Auckland bypass, near Bishop Auckland.

Discussions look set to begin with Durham County Council’s events team later this month to look at the logistics and cost of holding such a display.

Through the Bishop Auckland and Shildon Area Action Partnership, a number of councillors have agreed in principle to set aside money from their neighbourhood budgets to help with funding.

West Auckland councillor Rob Yorke said the idea was in response to comments from residents who said they would like to see the fireworks display return.

“It is very much just an idea at the moment but we are serious about looking into it,” he said. “We are not at a stage of having any exact details.

“We are hoping to get the ball rolling this year and get it off the ground. This is just the start of the journey. Hopefully we might be able to get businesses to contribute in following years.”

Bishop Auckland councillor Sam Zair added: “There is no safe location in Bishop Auckland so looking at the bigger picture the proposed site would be more central to access for all the surrounding villages.

“It is an idea at the moment but it can only be a good thing for the area.

“The most important thing is to keep people safe as possible so they can enjoy themselves.”
