NEWCASTLE United memorabilia fetched £25,000 when it went under the hammer in the city.

The Anderson and Garland Toys, Books and Collectables auction including Magpies signed shirts, photographs, programmes and two gold medals dating from the 1920s.

The two 9ct gold medals – a 1924 FA Cup Final winners’ medal and a 1911 Northumberland Hospital Football Competition medal – belonged to late club director Robert McKenzie and sold by his great-grandson, also Robert McKenzie.

The lot, which also included four team pictures that were displayed in the boardroom, was the day’s top-seller, beating its pre-sale estimate of £2,000 to £3,000 to go to an anonymous international bidder for £3,800.

An immense family collection of programmes and pictures sold by an unnamed vendor from Newcastle also made high prices. Around 2,000 club photographs were sold for a total of £8,300.

There was strong bidding t for a diverse collection of signed sports shirts, including ones autographed by Brazilian football legend Pele and players from England’s 1966 World Cup winning team collected by Newcastle businessman Tony Weightman.

Anderson and Garland auctioneer, Fred Wyrley-Birch, said: “It was a fantastic sale, and there was huge interest in the sporting – and especially Newcastle United – items.

“They went for an incredible amount of money, more than we were expecting, and it shows the interest and the passion that people have for their wonderful team.”
