A MAN well-known for dedicating years of his life to charity work alongside his wife has celebrated his 100th birthday.
Joseph Tarn, together with his wife Vera, were known as “Mr and Mrs Red Cross” for the work they did with the charity in Shildon where they lived.
They were responsible for medical loan equipment and making sure it reached the correct patient.
In addition to his charity work, Mr Tarn, now of Bishop Auckland, also spent nearly 50 years working for Wagon Works, beginning as a British Rail apprentice before becoming chief foreman.
Mr Tarn met his wife at Old Eldon open air swimming baths. She died 18 years ago.
He has a daughter, two grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Mr Tarn celebrated his milestone birthday with a family lunch at Auckland Castle, in Bishop Auckland, and will also enjoy another gathering at Headlam Hall, near Gainford, at the weekend.
He has received more than 50 cards, including ones from the Queen and the Department of Work and Pensions.
