THE colour, music and energy of Bollywood inspired a day of dance at a primary school today (Thursday, February 5).

Indian dance artist Revinda Cheema performed a series of authentic Bollywood routines for children at Horndale County Infant and Nursery School in Newton Aycliffe.

And it was not long before the energetic youngsters were up on their feet and dancing alongside her.

The workshop was part of the school’s annual culture week, which this year focused on India.

With the help of The Forge, a County Durham-based arts education agency, Horndale has staged an exciting programme of activities to celebrate and explore Indian culture.

From tasting traditional cuisine and learning about spices; to experimenting with textile art, Rangoli painting and Bollywood dance – the activities aimed to give children a better understanding of all aspects of Indian life.

Margaret Oughton, school secretary, said the children had enjoyed all of the activities but had been especially enthusiastic about the dancing.

“I think it is important for children to learn about the diverse nature of the world we live in,” she added.
