SCHOOLGIRLS have taken part in a cooking challenge.

Two teams from Durham High School for Girls’ junior house went head to head in a challenge inspired by TV’s Ready, Steady, Cook.

The youngsters had to work against the clock and in front of a live audience to produce a healthy dish from ingredients supplied to them at short notice.

The event follows a school bake-off contest last autumn and was run by school meal suppliers Chartwells Independent.

A school spokeswoman said: “These are interactive, educated fun sessions demonstrating the importance of healthy eating and show the children how to recognise and be confident in using fresh ingredients.

“The competition gets pupils excited about food and eating well and also provides students with hands-on cookery experience.”

Younger girls from the infants took part in Fun, Fitness and Food, an interactive, education session promoting healthy eating and fitness.

“Our girls love to cook and cookery is now part of the curriculum. This is yet another wonderful food event,” the spokeswoman added.
