A NEW minister has taken the helm at a North-East Baptist church.

Reverend Rodney Breckon has taken the reins at Grange Road Baptist Church, in Darlington, after 36 years at Northallerton’s New Life Baptist Church.

The 61-year-old was initially appointed in Easter 2012 to temporarily oversee the church’s work after its former minister, John Elliston, stepped down.

He will be officially inducted at a service tomorrow evening (Friday, January 9).

The father-of-two, who also serves as a chaplain at James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough, and Northallerton’s Friarage Hospital, said: “We want the people of Darlington to know we are a church that welcomes everybody.

“The trouble with some churches is that they are looking for perfect people, but there isn’t anyone who is perfect - we all have our Achilles heel.”

Rev Breckon said he is looking forward to continuing the good work of the church’s 700 Club, which helps homeless people in Darlington, and also plans to build links with other churches across the town.

As a keen musician, Rev Breckon is also hoping to encourage musicians of all abilities to get involved with the church and play during services.

He added: “I believe in life before death. My vision is for a healthy church – a healthy church will grow itself.

“When you turn 60 you do think should I begin to slow down, but I am really excited about the church and to see where this leads.”

Rev Breckon’s induction service will begin at 7.30pm tomorrow (Friday, January 9).
