DEVELOPERS hoping to transform a former college site into digs for hundreds of students have managed to overturn conditions they said threatened the £20m plan.
The applicant, Alumno Developments, was given the go-ahead to create student digs on the former New College site at Nevilles Cross in Durham in July last year.
However, the planning permission stipulated that Sheraton House, one of two boarded-up buildings on the site, should not be demolished until the conversion of the other, Neville House, had been “substantially completed”.
The condition was imposed to allay residents’ fears that were only one of the buildings converted, they would be indefinitely left with an eyesore.
At a meeting of Durham County Council’s Planning Committee yesterday (Tuesday 6), councillors voted unanimously to change the planning conditions.
Councillor David Hall said: “I don’t think this is going to succeed if the stipulation is not amended, if they want to demolish Sheraton House then I’m all for it.”
