A HAVE-a-go hero suffered facial injuries when he was jumped by a gang for trying to protect his friend.

The 21-year-old from Durham was waiting at a taxi rank near Newcastle railway station with his girlfriend and another friend when a group of three men approached, near the Centurion pub.

The man attempted to intervene after one of the men tried to punch his friend, but was jumped by the two other men.

He needed stitches to a gash above his right eye and was left with a cut lip and two black eyes.

His girlfriend was also pushed to the floor in the melee and injured her knee and leg.

The incident happened at about 11.45pm on Thursday, December 4.

PC Wayne Brown, from British Transport Police, appealed for anyone who witnessed the assault to come forward.

He also released CCTV images of two men police want to speak to about the incident.
