A CHARITY is buying tricycles for the disabled and racing wheelchairs after gaining a grant of £4,000.

The City of Sunderland Council for the Disabled received the cash from the Gannett Foundation, which is run by The Northern Echo's parent company.

It will be spent on the council's People's Pedal Power project, which aims to help disabled people keep fit.

The charity's manager, Les Wascoe, said: "Disabled people can become obese, especially if they are in wheelchairs and do not get enough exercise. The tricycles are very safe and they are also good fun to ride.

"There is also a social side to it, as it is good for disabled people to get out and mix with others."

People's Pedal Power is a cycling club for disabled people and run from the Hetton Lyons Country Park in Hetton-le-Hole

Mr Wascoe added: "We were absolutely delighted to get this money.

"It means that an innumerable amount of people will benefit because we can buy far more equipment."
