STAFF and pupils at Teesside Prep and High School, in Eaglescliffe, will soon be saying goodbye to two long-serving members of the support staff.

Joan Loughran and June Shippey are retiring at half-term, after accumulating nearly half a century of service between them.

Mrs Loughran, who lives in Eaglescliffe, began her school career as a temporary clerk, in 1978. She arrived for a month, and stayed 29 years.

She acted as school secretary for most of that time, becoming part-time receptionist, in 2002.

During her time, Mrs Loughran has worked under five headteachers, and says she has thoroughly enjoyed her work.

Following her retirement, she said, she will spend more time with her two grandchildren, work in the garden and enjoy playing indoor bowls.

"I'll miss school, but hope to be able to attend some of the many concerts and other events that take place, so I can keep in touch." she said.

Mrs Shippey, who comes from Middlesbrough, took on a temporary position as accounts clerk for nine months, covering for sickness. She must have impressed, as she was soon asked back and has been assistant bursar for more than 18 years.

Both women have enthusiastically supported school activities, in addition to their duties, even taking part in sponsored walks.

"I was also once 'conned' into appearing in the sixth form's fashion show, when they needed someone to model clothes for the more mature lady," said Mrs Shippey. "I found myself making rapid changes to model about 20 outfits."

For the past ten years, she has been a keen line dancer, and has also made early morning forays to her local gym before work.

In retirement, she's planning several holidays, and will be looking for something else to occupy her mind and stretch her imagination.

The school's headteacher, Tom Packer, said: "Both ladies have given wonderful service to the school and have been important members of our community. We will miss them, but wish them both a long and happy retirement."
