A MAN accused of stealing over £23,000 from his father has appeared in court.
Robert Simpson, 62, of Alington Place, Durham, is accused of the theft between March 1, 2010, and January 31.
He appeared Consett Magistrates’ Court today. (Tuesday, November 11)
Vicky Wilson, prosecuting, said: “It was the local authority who contacted the police because he had not paid his father’s fee for his care home at the time.
“There was a debt owing of around £24,000. He admitted using his father’s money for paying his own bills.
“He was using his father’s benefits for his own needs. It is a significant breach of trust.”
Suzanne Hanson, who represented Simpson, said he had indicated a guilty plea but disputed the amount.
The case was adjourned and is being sent to Durham Crown Court.
He has been bailed and will next appear on November 25.
