BARNARD Castle Rotary Club has hosted a guest speaker from Teesdale School to talk about his recent visit to two Auschwitz camps.

The Holocaust Educational Trust arranged for student, Jake Madgwick-Lawton, to take part in the trip which is designed to bring understanding to a new generation.

Mr Madgwick-Lawton is passionate about politics and has also undertaken an internship with MP Helen Goodman.

He was one of 300 students from the North East involved in the visit.

The Trust works with secondary schools throughout the UK not only to take sixth form students to Auschwitz but to encourage Holocaust survivors to speak to pupils so that their experiences are never forgotten.

After the visit the students met together to discuss what they had learnt and how they would share their experience with pupils within their own schools.

The club’s international and foundation chairman, Ian Hodgson, said the whole club wanted to thank Mr Madgwick-Lawton for a “very eloquent and informative talk”.
