ORGANISERS of a New Year’s Day charity fun run are hoping it doesn’t turn out to be pants.

Richmond’s Tri Kudu Triathlon Club has announced their Funderwear Run will take place on January 1 at 11am, in aid of Prostate Cancer UK.

Starting and finishing at the town’s swimming pool, up to 300 competitors are expected to brave the 5km loop around Easby Abbey wearing just their underpants and a fancy dress hat.

Organisers Richie Smith and Paul Taylor took their inspiration from the Kona Underpants race in Hawaii.

Mr Smith said: “Paul took part in this year’s Kona race and we thought that this served as a perfect opportunity.

“We believe that Prostate Cancer UK is both an underfunded charity and rather appropriate for our race.

“Ultimately, the more people that enter, the more money we can raise for a fantastic cause.”

Both men and women are encouraged to enter, with the latter able to wear a bikini, bra or shorts, and several prizes will be issued on the day for best pants and hat.

Mr Smith added: “Many people take a dip in the sea so we see this as an opportunity for local people to take part in something both worthwhile and fun.

“What better way to shake off the New Year’s Eve hangover and bring in the New Year than by taking part in a fun 5km run?”

Entrance fee is £10. Book online: bookitzone/funderwear5k
