A MAN who forged his father’s signature so he could marry the love of his life has celebrated his 100th birthday.

Les Robson marked the occasion surrounded by family at Lindisfarne Care Home, Newton Aycliffe, today (Thursday, October 23).

Born in Helmington Row, County Durham, Mr Robson had a passion for dancing in his younger days and after being stood up by his date at a dance he met his wife Rose Emma.

The married six weeks after meeting with Mr Robson forging his father’s signature so they could tie the knot.

They were married for 69 years and had two children, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The centurion signed up for army service at the age of 25 and later became a popular painting a decorator and artist.

During the War, he was a tank Sergeant in the 149 Royal Armoured Corps, (KOYLI) support regiment which was involved in the Battle of Kohima.

He turned down promotion because he loved his tank and his mates who he worked with.

He received the bronze Oak Leaf Emblem, issued by command of the King to members of His Majesty’s Forces who were mentioned in despatches and published in the London Gazette.

He is known within his family for his sense of humour and story-telling.
