A CYCLIST was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries after being found lying in the road by an off-duty paramedic.
The Great North Air Ambulance Service was called to the incident on the B6278, just south of Stanhope, in County Durham, shortly before 4pm today.
The cyclist, who is understood to be in his 50s, was found unconscious by an off-duty paramedic from the North-East Ambulance Service (NEAS).
He was flown to the Royal Victoria Infirmary, in Newcastle, where he was treated for head and shoulder injuries.
A GNAAS spokesman said: “He was cared for by the off-duty paramedic until GNAAS and NEAS land crews arrived on scene.
“He was flown to the RVI, in Newcastle, for specialist treatment, a flight time from Weardale of nine minutes.”
His condition is described as stable.
