AN EVENT celebrating three years of work to improve Durham’s woodlands and riverbanks takes place this weekend.
Durham Cathedral got money from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Banks Community Fund and elsewhere to improve the picturesque banks of the River Wear in Durham city centre.
Volunteers have cleared and planted woodland and there have been health and history walks.
Work is continuing to open up the area and create quiet spaces.
To celebrate three years, there will be a free family fun day on Saturday (August 9) with wood turning, facepainting, orienteering and more.
There will be birds of prey displays on Prebends Bridge at 12.30pm and 3pm. Guided history walks will take place at 1.30pm and 2.30pm, with a health walk at 1pm.
Other events will take place at the front of the cathedral from 11am to 4pm. The event is free and open to all.
