A PRISON museum’s Victorian kitchen garden is to be put back to full usage after a local chef designed a menu incorporating its rare produce.
Ripon Workhouse Museum gardens, established in 1850, is tended by volunteers using traditional methods and grows a variety of heritage fruits and vegetables including Dog’s Snout apples and Fat Lazy Blonde lettuce.
This summer, Ripon chef Matthew Lockwood of Lockwoods Restaurant in the town – located just 200 metres from the garden – will create a dinner party menu for a special outdoor supper night.

The Workhouse Garden Dinner Party is planned within the kitchen garden on the evening of Saturday, August 16.
The outdoor supper will feature a three course platter style menu designed and prepared by Lockwoods’ chefs which will showcase the best of heritage seasonal produce picked straight from the garden.
Matthew Lockwood said: “Expect a menu which will delight the taste buds with a summer feast of fresh, healthy and wholesome local heritage fruit, herbs and vegetables.
“This exciting collaboration allows us to demonstrate different ways of using heirloom vegetables to create contemporary seasonal cuisine.”
The evening starts at 6pm and costs £35 per person, and guests are invited to bring their own drinks.
