NATURE-loving families are urged by a wildlife charity to try camping with a difference.

Local branches of the RSPB are taking part in its Big Wild Sleepout, which encourages people all ages to spend a night under the stars and raise money for wildlife.

The RSPB Durham Local Group is holding an event on June 21 at Crowtrees Local Nature Reserve, at Quarrington Hill near Durham.

From 5pm until late visitors can view the wildlife on the reserve and admire the flowers, before gathering to enjoy a barbeque.

Barbeque facilities will be provided but participants are asked to bring their own food. Participants will also need to bring warm clothes and suitable footwear for a walk.

Tickets are £15 per adult, £12 per RSPB adult member and £8 per child. For further information and booking call Robyn Roberts on 0191 2334323.

On the same night, supporters will also gather at RSPB Saltholme site, near Stockton, from 6pm to 11pm.

Visitors will have an exclusive opportunity to explore the reserve after closing time – before going home and holding a Big Wild Sleepout in their gardens.

Lydia Tague, Marketing Officer at RSPB Saltholme, said: “The RSPB is encouraging people to sleep out in their gardens and raise money for wildlife – so what better way to prepare than discovering the wildlife at RSPB Saltholme after dark.
