A COURSE exploring the history of the Prince Bishops begins next month (Friday, June 13).
Local historian Dorothy Hamilton will lead the Land of the Prince Bishops course, which runs over five Fridays and includes a visit to Auckland Castle.
“County Durham has a unique history, because the Bishops of Durham had a lot of additional powers and responsibilities compared to other bishops,” Dr Hamilton said.
“This course will help people to understand the lifestyle of these extra powerful bishops and what effect this had on the history of County Durham.”
The first session is on Friday, June 13, at Alington House, North Bailey, Durham, from 10.30am to 12.30pm.
The course costs £56, including entry to Auckland Castle. Lower fees are available for people receiving means-tested benefits.
