A CAR crashed through the glass wall of supermarket Waitrose yesterday, after an elderly driver accidentally reversed into the store.
Emergency crews were called to the upmarket food store in York at 4.45pm on Saturday (May 24), when the Ford Fiesta smashed through the glass and metal frame and came to rest in the shop.
Customers reported hearing a loud bang as the car shattered the window.
A member of staff was slightly injured in the accident, suffering minor cuts and bruises, and the elderly driver was assisted from her vehicle by firefighters. She was checked by paramedics at the scene but was uninjured.
Firefighters from York and Acomb and a heavy rescue unit from Tadcaster were all sent to the scene. They made sure the area was safe before handing the incident over to police.
Specialist contractors were called in to remove the twisted metal from around the car.
The store on Foss Islands Road in York, was closed for the remainder of the day and reopened at 11am this morning (Sunday, May 25) after the area was cleaned up and the window boarded up.
A Waitrose spokeswoman said: "Thankfully nobody was seriously injured and we're very grateful to the emergency services for their prompt and expert response."
