PAST achievements and new beginnings were celebrated when a council appointed its new mayor.

Councillor Wendy Hillary, 51, will serve as the mayor of Great Aycliffe until May next year.

At a full council meeting last night (Wednesday, May 14), Mrs Hillary said: “I would like to say what an honour and a privilege it is for me to be appointed as mayor.

“As I look along the wall at the photos of past mayors, many of whom are in the room tonight, I hope to achieve their status as a successful ambassador for Great Aycliffe.”

Coun Hillary, who was widowed 20 years ago, chose Cruse Bereavement as one of her charities, with all donations to be used to fund its work at the Pioneering Care Centre in Newton Aycliffe.

The School Benevolent Fund, which provides coats and shoes to children in need in County Durham, was named as her second charity.

The outgoing mayor, Cllr Barbara Clare, was also praised for her “outstanding” work.

Cllr Clare thanked everyone for their support, adding: “I wanted this mayoral year to acknowledge and celebrate the people of Great Aycliffe and their achievements.”

Cllr Mary Dalton was appointed deputy mayor and labour councillors, Bob Fleming and John Clare, retained their positions as leader and deputy leader.
