A VOLUNTEER army who help visitors find their way around a tourist city is hoping to recruit more members.

Durham Pointers was set up in 2012 to help people find their way round the city centre and offer tourists a helping hand.

The volunteers, easily-identifiable from their bright pink tabards, will be back on the streets of Durham from Monday, May 19.

An induction course for new volunteers will take place in St Nicholas’ Church on Friday, May 16 at 2.15pm, followed by a meeting of all members at Cafe Cenno, in Durham Market Hall, at 4.30pm on the same day.

Anyone interested in joining the group should visit www.durhampointers.co.uk for contact information and an application form.

While volunteers are not expected to act as formal tourist guides, they are required to have a working knowledge of the city and its attractions, and to enjoy speaking to and helping people.

They are asked to be available, as far as possible, for two hours between 9.30am and 3pm once a fortnight during the summer.

Esther Ashby, a member of the Durham Pointers organising committee, said: “Many of our volunteers have been with us since our launch in 2012, but anyone keen to join the Durham Pointers is more than welcome.

“If you’re passionate about the city of Durham, then you will no doubt be a great asset to our team of volunteers, who generously give their time to help visitors make the most of their visit to Durham.”
