A SCOOTER rally is set to descend on a seaside town for a three day celebration of all things Mod.

In the 60s they rode Vespas and Lambrettas, listened to the music of The Small Faces and The Who and they had distinctive dress style all of their own.

And over the weekend of June 6, 7 and 8 the aim is to bring the best in scooters, music and traders to Redcar to recreate the heyday of the Mod movement.

Organised by scooter fan Damian Hunt and his old school friend Paul Power the weekend will combine an appreciation of Vespas and Lambrettas with a celebration of music the Mod, Ska and Northern Soul world.

With a history of violence erupting during the early days of Mod when they clashed with rockers on the rocky beach of Brighton, the 45-year-old organiser is promising a more peaceful, family friendly affair.

The nursing home manager said: “There hasn’t been a scooter rally in the town since 1985 and I wanted to do something about that. Other places such as Whitby and Scarborough have rallies but I can’t see why Redcar should miss out on the chance of having 3-400 people coming to the town.

“I’ve always been into the Mod scene after watching The Who’s Quadrophenia film when I first saw all the scooters riding into Brighton.

“There used to violence associated with scooter rallies but this weekend is going to be a family orientated celebration of the Mod scene.”

As well as being able to take advantage of a full camping weekend at Redcar Rugby Club, visitors will be able to take in the sights of fully restored scooters while listening to music provided by local bands including The Last Fakers and The Style Selektors (CORR).
