A PEACE campaigner will bring his anti-nuclear weapons crusade to Darlington this week.

Bruce Kent, one of Britain's best-known peace campaigners, will be at the Friends’ Meeting House, in Skinnergate, at 7pm, on Wednesday (April 23).

He is on a national tour, to speak for those who want parliament to scrap Trident – Britain’s nuclear weapons system.

Parliament will debate and vote on whether Britain should replace Trident with a new system in 2016.

Opponents of Trident say the huge operating costs make the system unsustainable.

A Friends’ spokesman said: “With government spending cuts increasing, people are demanding that the money should be spent on real human needs, not on weapons of mass destruction.

“Bruce will be highlighting the cost of Trident, particularly with regard to addressing poverty and humanitarian issues, as well as the legal and moral issues involved with weapons of mass destruction.

Mr Kent served as chairman of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament from 1977 to 1979 and 1987 to 1990, and general secretary from 1979 to 1985.

He was also chairman of the War on Want, from 1974 to 1976 and president of the International Peace Bureau from 1985 to 1992.
