TWO men are in hospital, one critically ill, after a fire on Tyneside last night.

The emergency services were called to reports of a fire inside a property in Redemarch, Leam Lane, Gateshead, at 6.36pm.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said: "The fire was extinguished and a man was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary with serious injuries. He is currently in a critical condition.

"A second man sustained injuries and was also taken to the RVI. He is in a stable condition."

Enquiries into the fire are ongoing, and extra officers are carrying out patrols in the area.
