FIREFIGHTERS had to free a woman after she fell down the stairs and trapped her foot in a baby gate.

The crew from Crook, County Durham, were called to a house on Ash Drive in Willington at around 11am today (April 14).

Officers used holmatro hydraulic equipment to free the woman, who is understood to be in her mid 20s.

She was then seen to by paramedics from the North East Ambulance Service before being taken to University Hospital of North Durham suffering leg injuries.

A spokeswoman for the ambulance service said the woman’s condition was complicated as she had recently had surgery and the fall may have caused damage to the wound.

Colin Davis from County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service said the Crook crew were called by the ambulance service.

He said: “Upon arrival at the property firefighters extricated one female adult from a child’s stair gate in which she had trapped her foot after falling down the stairs.

“This was an unusual incident but demonstrates how well the emergency services work together and he flexible and innovative firefighters must be when faced with out of the ordinary scenarios.”
