THE annual St Cuthbert’s Day annual pilgrimage has been staged over the weekend.
The Northumbrian Association's seven-and-a-half mile walk from Chester-le-Street to Durham Cathedral took place on Saturday.
It retraces the final route of the remains of the patron saint of Northumbria via Finchale Abbey and over 100 walkers joined in.
In Durham Market Place, there was music and other entertainment before a piper and drummer led walkers to St Cuthbert’s shrine at the cathedral and a service by the Very Reverend Michael Sadgrove, the Dean of Durham.
Northumbrian Association secretary Marion Bridgewood said: “People come for a number of reasons. Some enjoy walking in a beautiful part of the country, for others it is a pilgrimage and other come for the company.
“It is gathering momentum. I think we had more walkers because we held it on the weekend and not Thursday, which was St Cuthbert’s Day.
“It was glorious and everyone has been saying they had a wonderful day.”
