SCHOOLCHILDREN experienced the wonders of water polo at a special tournament yesterday (Tuesday, March 18).

Sedgefield Water Polo Club staged the contest at Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre to encourage more youngsters in the town to take up the sport.

Children from Byerley Park, Sugar Hill, Woodham Burn, Stephenson Way, Aycliffe Village and Vane Road primary schools took part in the friendly competition, which saw teams compete in a series of matches.

In the end, Byerley Park proved victorious.

Mel Stephenson, of Sedgefield Water Polo Club, said: “It was a wonderful event. The children really enjoyed themselves.

“We want to raise the profile of water polo as it is a fantastic sport. Not only does it improve swimming ability and fitness – it is great fun too.”

The Great Aycliffe and Middridge Partnership funded the tournament and its co-ordinator, Brian Riley, presented the prizes on the day.

Sedgefield Water Polo Club is one of the country’s leading clubs, with training sessions taking place at Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre, Spennymoor Leisure Centre and Woodham Sports Academy in Newton Aycliffe up to six times a week.

The club won the national championships in 2002, 2004 and 2006 and two members played for Team GB in the London Olympics in 2012.

Sedgefield Water Polo Club is always looking for new members.
