A CHEF who took up running to lose weight is preparing for a year of events that will test him to the limit and raise money for a cause close to his heart.
One of his first will be the Sunderland City Half Marathon on Sunday 4 May.
The 41-year-old said: “I am trying to raise awareness and collect sponsorship for Breast Cancer Care, because relatives and a work colleague have suffered from this dreadful disease.
"I also hope to inspire more people to get out and do more exercise, as my story is the proof that it really makes the difference.”
Mr Sawyer took up running just over a year ago after deciding he want to lose weight and improve his fitness.
He promptly joined his local running club, Sedgefield Harriers, and has lost more than five stone.
“Being part of Sedgefield Harriers has made a huge difference to my life,” he said.
“Even though everyone seemed to be fitter and faster than me, club members continually encouraged me to keep going.
“Once my fitness and stamina improved, it helped my weight loss and I really started enjoying taking part in races.”
