Two teenagers involved in a two-vehicle crash on a moorland road are still fighting for their lives today.

A 17-year-old male youth and an 18-year-old man, both passengers in a black Vauxhall Corsa, remain in a critical condition in James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough.

The 17-year-old male driver of the car was taken to Leeds General Infirmary where he remains in a stable condition.

The accident occurred at around 3.15pm on Thursday at the junction of Moor Road and the road known locally at the Tank Road, near Leyburn, North Yorkshire, close to the Bellerby Camp military ranges.

The Corsa was in collision with a white Mini driven by a woman in her mid-60's.

The teenagers, from the Masham and Bedale areas, were airlifted to hospital suffering life-threatening injuries.

The woman in the Mini was taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital by road ambulance with minor injuries.

Soldiers from nearby Catterick Garrison, who were on exercise on the ranges, heard the collision and immediately went to the scene where they provided first aid until emergency services could arrive.

A road closure was in place for almost seven hours while police investigated the scene and the vehicles were recovered.

Police are keen to trace any witnesses or anyone who recalls seeing either car before the collision.

The Corsa is believed to have driven over Grinton Moor to the crossroads and the Mini had travelled from Richmond towards Redmire.

Traffic Sergeant John Lumbard, from North Yorkshire Police roads policing group, said: “If you witnessed the collision or saw either of the cars just prior to the incident, I urge you to contact the police straight away.”

Anyone with information should call North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option two, and ask for Andy Fraser or Martin Mulcaster from the Major Collision Investigation Team.
