THE plight of people displaced by ethnic violence in Burma was highlighted by a peace envoy during a visit to the region.

Rotary Peace Scholar Sang Luaia and his family were guests of Barnard Castle Rotary Club.

During their visit, Mr Luaia, who is based at Bradford University and sponsored by Rotary International to study a masters degree in peace studies, gave a talk at Teesdale School.

He explained the causes and consequences of the ethnic violence in Burma and highlighted the plight of those displaced by the conflict.

He also shared his experiences of working with refugees from different sides of the conflict, helping to provide food, water and shelter as well as building trust and understanding between the different groups.

Teesdale School co-principal Simon Maguire said it had been an inspirational evening.
