A CHORAL society is preparing for one of its biggest concerts to date and is encouraging new singers to get involved.
In June, Bishop Auckland Choral Society (BACS) will perform Brahms’ Requiem, a 19th century masterpiece renowned for its craftsmanship and spiritual overtones.
Rehearsals begin at 7pm this evening (Tuesday, February 4), at Bishop Auckland Town Hall, but the society is keen to hear from anyone else who would like to join the ranks.
Helen Lewis, BACS publicity officer, said it would be an unforgettable experience.
“It is a fabulous piece to sing,” she said. “Brahms is often considered very dark but this isn’t always the case. The Requiem is very tuneful and full of emotion.
“We would be delighted to welcome new singers, especially gentlemen. If you have sung the work before, and long to repeat the experience, don’t miss this chance.”
The work was first performed in England in July 1871, at a private concert, which saw the orchestral part reduced to a pianoforte duet.
BACS plans to recreate this performance at the concert in June, with the society’s own accompanist Allan Coombes joining forces with North-East composer Duncan Brown.
