LEADING North-East tourist attraction Beamish Museum is appealing for Bevin Boys’ memories.
The museum, near Chester-le-Street, County Durham, is working on a project about the Home Front in World War Two.
But there are few documents about the Bevin Boys, who were conscripted to work in the mines instead of serving in the military. With no uniforms or medals, it was only recent times that the Bevin Boys began to receive recognition for their vital contribution to the war effort.
A museum spokesman said: “If you were a Bevin Boy, or have artefacts relating to Bevin Boys that you think Beamish might be interested in, please get in touch with David Smith, the Museum’s Community Engagement Co-ordinator,tel 0191- 370 4031, e-mail davidsmith@beamish.org.uk”
It is hoped that former Bevin Boys will go to the museum during the half-term holiday in February to tell their story to visitors.
