POLICE have stepped up patrols after an assault at a medical centre.
Officers were sent to Fulwell Medical Centre, in Sunderland, following reports a patient was causing a disturbance.
But during the police response an officer suffered a facial injury and needed hospital treatment.
A man in his 50s has been arrested on suspicion of assault.
Northumbria Police are increasing patrols in the area in the hope of reassuring residents.
The incident happened at about 3.30pm on Monday (January 6).
Acting Neighbourhood Inspector Dave Cole said: “We know residents in the area are concerned about this incident and I would like to reassure them we have extra officers in the area to answer any concerns they might have.
“The incident was dealt with quickly, officers attended and the man was detained.
“Although a police officer was injured during the incident, no members of the public or other people in the surgery were hurt.”
